To be technical, the Golden Age of
comics could really be dated from 1933 - pre 1956. These books are in high
demand in all grades. Obviously, of the different eras, these are the most desirable.
Let's face it, these books are known by everyone and are starting to fall apart
from age. If you have them, from super hero to funny animal, they're money in
the bank.
The beginning of the Golden Age
can be debated endlessly but for our purposes, the Golden Age begins in June,1938. In this month, National Periodic Publishers release a
character that will forever change the comic industry. Action Comics 1 is released
and we are introduced to the first and probably greatest member of the spandex
brigade; Superman. What can I say that hasn't already been said.
He is the epitome of everything great about
Eleven months later, National
Periodical followed up with another hit. Batman's debut in Detective 27 (May,
1939) brought about another type of hero; the darker hero. One who would
blatantly work outside the law for justice. Now we
have both the 'good' cop and the 'bad' cop.
Every hero from here on is just an
off-shoot. Yeah, the origins change, the gimmicks change, but the basics are
there. Super powered or human in peak condition. But who cared?!! The stories
were fun and the art was great! And one thing for
sure; it was a guys only club!
